In a review of a current production of Sam Shepard’s play True West, the New York Times (free registration required) refers to the 1982 Steppenwolf production as “brilliant,” and notes: “The definitive production is of course the legendary 1982 revival starring then little-known actors Gary Sinise and John Malkovich. Who would possibly want to follow in these footsteps?”
(Here’s hoping the recorded version of that production will be released on DVD someday.)
The Washington Post has an article about Steppenwolf’s production of Love-Lies-Bleeding, which is in residence at the Kennedy Center this week.
Gary and the Lt. Dan Band performed at the closing night gala of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s 3rd Annual Golf Classic taking place this weekend in and around Palm Springs. Stormy weather kept the golfers off the links, but it matter little - a poker tournament was set up instead. The opening night reception was hosted by film critic and Chicagoan, Roger Ebert. Also in attendance were Steppenwolf Theatre folks such as artistic director Martha Lavey and ensemble member Kevin Anderson. Other celebrities on hand for the weekend included Carmen Giovinazzo, Dick Butkus, Ken Howard, Andy Richter, Gordon Clapp, Robert Hays, Gregory Harrison, Kevin Sorbo, Richard Karn, Bruce McGill, and TV’s “24″ president, Greg Itzen.
In previous years, the golf classic has raised $1 million to support the theatre.

* More cool news! Apollo 13 will be returning to an IMAX theater near you late this summer. Unlike previous screenings of theatrical films on IMAX screens, which simply blew up images projected from a conventional 35 mm negative, a new process has been developed that is said to yield much better results by converting the film’s negative to a 70 mm IMAX format. Those who have seen the results are reportedly quite impressed! The prospect of enjoying this wonderful movie in the theater again, much less in the fabulous widescreen format, is really something to look forward to.
