NYT: Sinise’s True West is the Best
In a review of a current production of Sam Shepard’s play True West, the New York Times (free registration required) refers to the 1982 Steppenwolf production as “brilliant,” and notes: “The definitive production is of course the legendary 1982 revival starring then little-known actors Gary Sinise and John Malkovich. Who would possibly want to follow in these footsteps?”
(Here’s hoping the recorded version of that production will be released on DVD someday.)

I read your article and noted that you wished there was a recorded version of Tru West. There is a DVD of Tru West from a 1984 showing with Gary and John. It was for Hong Kong, but is recorded in English. I found it on Ebay.

There’s never been a commercial release of True West on DVD, so what you bought was likely a bootleg, burned-to-DVD copy of the laserdisc or videotape. I hope we can get an official DVD release at some point.

How about we start a petition for True West on DVD? Anyone know who to contact? Academy Home Entertainment released the VHS version, I believe, but I couldn’t find them in a brief search on the Web.

I would be happy to, Katie, but I have no idea who holds the rights at this point.

Steppenwolf produced it and likely have the rights, but Sam Shepard would possibly have to clear it too.
